Century Sun, “Heat treaters of Tool Steel Screws”

Century Sun deepens its commitment with Feed Screw Manufactures!

By nature, Century Sun Metal Treating is
a service organization. The Traverse
City, Michigan based company provides
a full roster of metal-treating services, all
with one goal in mind; to increase the
service life of its customers’ tooling
through quality metal treating and by
adding value to those tools.

Century Sun provides most all required
heat treating services including;
carburizing, carbonitriding, induction
hardening, ion nitriding, quench &
tempering in both high pressure gas
vacuum equipment & salt bath. The
diversity of this service offering has made
Century Sun one of the industry’s leaders
in vertical integration, and has
established the company as a one-stop
shop for metal treatment.

Century Sun has bolstered these key
positioning elements with its total quality
management program. Its more than 100
employees , including its staff of
metallurgists, are organized into self-
directed work teams. The company has
proven to be one of the industry’s most
forward-looking companies in its metal
treatment processes as well. It offers two
patented surface treatment processes,
CaseWare & CaseTuff.

All of these facets have combined to
bring Century Sun a long way from when
William G. Janis founded the company in
1979. From the beginning, Centruy Sun
became known for taking jobs the
competition felt were too difficult, too
risky & and too time-consuming.

Century Sun’s plant now measures more than 75,000 square feet. The company’s organization also includes sales offices in Detroit, & Grand Rapids, Michigan, and in Toledo, Ohio. Its customer base covers 37 states, Canada & Mexico. The company services the automotive, aerospace, medical & commercial metal working industries.

Century Sun serves these industries with one
of the most formidable arrays of equipment
the industry can offer. The Traverse City
facility includes (1) 6-bar, (2) 10-bar and(1)
12-bar nitrogen gas quenching vacuum
furnaces; three ion nitriding furnaces; six
nitrogen-controlled tempers; four bright
vacuum tempering furnaces; three Super
Allcase atmosphere-controlled integral quench
furnaces; dual spindle induction harder;
cryogenic chamber capable of -300F; &
multiple blasting & cleaning equipment.

Century Sun has specialized in the highly
difficult heat treatment of cutting tools,
including drills, end mills, milling cutters, taps
& thread chasers, hobs, broach tooling and
injection feed screws. Century Sun has a fully
staffed & highly trained straightening
department to compliment the 24/7 operation.
Parts such as starter motor gears,
transmission components, helicopter gears,
aircraft camshafts & crankshafts, hydraulic
pump shafts and bearing races are made
stronger and more resistant to wear and
corrosion at Century Sun.

In November 2001 Century Sun
completed the construction and
installation of its 110" deep salt bath
heat treating department. This
expansion makes Century Sun the
leader in salt bath heat treating. Says
Jim Black, Vice President & General
Manager "The broach and feed screw
manufacturers asked us to custom
engineer and build this line…we made
the commitment to the industry by
building it, and they’re reciprocating by
committing their business to us." This
has become a strong niche market for
Century Sun. These industries demand
high quality heat treating and
straightening of long-length tools.
"When the Tool Maker requires high
performance tools, he looks to Century
Sun for value added quality." says Mr.
Black.

Century Sun’s strength lies in its unrelenting focus on the customer. The heat-treating business is built on trust. Customers bring extremely expensive tools and parts to the company, with almost all of the cost basis already built into them. They trust that Century Sun will perform only quality thermal processes, and that the tool or part will increase significantly in value and will perform at or beyond expectations. They trust, too, that they will not have to be concerned about tool or part failure.

The company is continuing to expand its customer services, as it seeks to meet its customers’ continuing requirements and industry demands for high-quality heat treating and tooling. The company owns and operates its own fleet of 18 trucks. By strategically locating distribution centers in Detroit, Grand Rapids, St. Joseph Michigan & Toledo Ohio, Century Sun services all of Michigan, Northern Ohio, Indiana & Illinois, from Chicago to Cleveland.

Along with the company’s total quality management training, Century Sun’s customer service has been solidified by the fact that there is little employee turnover. The company has engendered a strong team sprit, partly through its work team organization and partly because of its reward system. Wages at Century Sun are based on skills & performance,

and not on seniority. The company also pays
bonuses when company/employee goals are
reached. For more information on Century Sun’s
