Mixing enhancement plays very important roles in single-screw extrusion process, since it's lack of mixing performance compared with that of twin-screw extruder impedes the widespread applications regardless of their superiority in power consumptions, expeditures, maintences, etc. Our laboratory invented genius mixing device called Chaos Screw (CS) which induces chaos so that the mixing performance increases drastically. Now CS is considered as the first practical application of chaotic mixing in the single-screw extrusion process (Rauwendaal, C., Polymer mixing, Hanser Publishers, Munich 1998).

We carried theoretical and numerical approaches to investigate the following objectives.

* Rigorous dynamical modeling
* Numerical verifications of dynamical or chaotic structures
* Dynamics near homoclinic tangle
* Dynamics inside nonlinear rotations
* Bifurcation analysis of subharmonic orbits and invariant sets
* Comparison between numerical and experimental results by the experimental visualization of flow in CS

The dispersive mixing of liquid-liquid systems occurs when the liquids are not miscible. This is an important operation in the polymer industry because the majority of the polymers blended together are immiscible or at best partially miscible. As a result, a microstructure of separate phases will result from the melt blending process. This microstructure will be determined by the pertinent properties of the ingradients and the interaction properties, the mixer conditions, and the mixer geometry, so our laboratory is doing immiscible mixing experiment by using a chaotic simulator which is invented by our laboratory. (Rauwendaal, C., Polymer mixing, Hanser Publishers, Muncich 1998)

We carried theoretical and numerical approaches to investigate the following objectives.

* Experimental observation of drop breakup and deformation in chaotic flows
* 3-Dimensional Simulation of drop breakup in chaotic flows
* Comparison between numerical and experimental results
