Advanced Single-Screw Polymer Extrusion and Screw Design
A 31/2 - Day Intensive Workshop


Objective:
To educate and empower extrusion engineers, and experienced scientists to increase production rates and product quality at their plants upon returning from this course.

Study single-screw extrusion technology in detail, both in theory and practice, from conceptual understanding to mathematical models. You will learn a scientific approach to screw design, evaluating various commercial high performance screws. You will also learn the basics of twin-screw extrusion, and the fundamentals of polymers relevant to extrusion.

About the instructor:

Chan I. Chung is a Professor Emeritus and Research Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY.

Professor Chung has been involved in polymer extrusion and melt rheology for the last 38 years. He has authored over 100 papers and holds 12 patents.

His three extruder screw patents have become commercially successful high performance screws, and have drastically increased production rates at numerous companies.  

He is recognized mainly for his contribution to polymer extrusion technology and screw design, both in theory and practice. His professional activities have been primarily at the SPE-Extrusion Division. He was elected a Fellow of the SPE in 1985 when there were only about 30 fellows among about 25,000 members. He received the highest award by the SPE-Extrusion Division, “Distinguished Achievement Award” in 1987 for outstanding contribution to the knowledge of plastic extrusion, and the “Bruce Maddock Award” in 2000 for outstanding achievement in single-screw extrusion technology.

Prof. Chung served as a technical consultant for many companies, and has a proven track record in improving quality and production rates. Compiling his research achievements and practical knowledge, he published a book in 2000 titled, “EXTRUSION OF POLYMERS - Theory and Practice” by Hanser Gardener Pub. He also contributed two sections on extrusion compounding in “The Guide on Extrusion Technology and Troubleshooting”, edited by John Vlachopoulos and John R. Wagner, SPE, 2001.
