Biodegradable Packaging Material

The recycling of waste has been a high priority for governments of all developed nations.

 Unfortunately, due to a lack of economic incentives and a feasible technology, there has been very little success in reducing waste.

Present needs are to produce biodegradable material made from renewable, environmentally friendly materials such as starch, protein and cellulose from sources for packaging.

This effort may greatly reduce solid plastic waste and concurrently promote significantly increased use of crops grown in the United States.

Growing volumes of plastic waste, coupled with limits on available land fill, have placed added emphasis on development of biodegradable and recyclable packaging materials.

Starch is an abundant, biodegradable and renewable resource currently used to produce foamed protective packaging, replacing traditional lightweight plastics such as expanded polystyrene "peanuts."

Starch-based loose fill also contains a variety of biodegradable polymers and additives which improve resiliency and compressibility, and aid in processing.

Extrusion is playing an important role in processing biodegradable packaging material.

Multi-Purpose, Multi-Shape Products

Packaging material isn't the only shaped product that can be produced by extrusion. Other products - plastic toy parts, bowls and plates, toy animals - also can be made through extrusion processes.

Fiber for Industrial Uses

Wheat and rice straws - widely available in many parts of the world - can be combined with other materials and processed by extrusion into raw materials for industrial uses.

Protein Film

Extrusion can process high-protein oilseed crops into biodegradable plastic packaging films that ensure high quality and long shelf life for food and other products.
