Removing screw elements from splined shafts

Removing screw elements from splined shafts

Removing segmented screw elements from a splined shaft is not always easy, since polymer can creep between adjacent elements and degrade into an adhesive. The following is a basic removal method:

1. Work on the screws immediately after cleaning and while still hot.
2. Clamp one screw in a bench vise so it is horizontal with the screw tip end near the vise (brass or aluminum jaws).
3. Unscrew the tip, if the screw element doesn't slide off use a propane torch to heat the element and try again. If it still doesn't move you will need a brass drift punch and hammer to apply impact force.
4. As you remove each element brush/clean the exposed shaft to make it easier to remove subsequent elements.
5. Consider removing elements from the shafts on a regular schedule as part of your preventative maintenance program.
